BAföG for international students
One of these possibilities is for EU citizens to work in Germany while studying. The background to this is the principle of free movement of workers that applies in the EU. In concrete terms, the following requirements must be met:
- When applying for BAföG for the first time, the student must have already been gainfully employed in Germany for at least ten weeks.
- The gainful employment must be at least twelve hours per week on average over one month.
- In order to maintain BAföG entitlement, the student must continue to work to this extent throughout their studies.
- This regulation also applies to students who are self-employed.
- In order for EU citizens to be entitled to BAföG, however, the employment must allow for full-time study.
Family members as defined in Section 1, Paragraph 2, No. 3 of the Freedom of Movement Act/EU, or persons closely associated as defined in Section 1, Paragraph 2, No. 4 of the Freedom of Movement Act/EU, who derive their right of residence from EU citizens, also meet the personal requirements for BAföG without having to pursue employment in Germany themselves. BAföG for international students
International students may be eligible for funding under certain conditions. The following list is not exhaustive and contains only the most important cases.
There are two main groups:
Support for EU citizens and citizens of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein

- if one has resided legally in Germany for at least five years, or
- if at least one parent has lived legally in Germany for at least five years, or
- if you have migrant worker status, i.e. if you have been employed as an EU citizen in Germany for at least 12 hours per week for at least 10 weeks prior to the first BAföG application, therefore enjoy freedom of movement and maintain employment during your studies. It is possible to "grow into" this status, i.e. after a rejection, gainful employment can be taken up and a new application can be submitted after 10 weeks, or
- if one has already worked in Germany before the start of the training (at least 6 months) and the activity is related in content to the current studies.
Support for students from other countries (third-country nationals)

- if you yourself are a recognized* person entitled to asyl

BAföG funding for study abroad, education medel and lärling loans
Foreign study BAföG grants
Another option to finance your study or research visit abroad fryst vatten to apply for a foreign study BAföG grant.
