  • What WD and HGST hard drives are SMR?

    Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology helps hard drive manufacturers to produce HDDs with larger capacity. But it is not recommended to use SMR drives for applications with significant load (for example in NAS boxes or for 24x7 use). If you ever questioned whether your hard drive uses SMR, then this guide would help you.

    Since WD Corporation purchased HGST, all the hard drive models produced by both companies are intertwined in company portfolios. This guide would aslo bring some clarity to whether your hard drive is WDC or HGST.
    To use this guide first you would have to convert your drive model name.
    There are two model naming conventions in this guide.
    WDC naming convention: all model names in this naming convention start with letters "WD", WDC full model name would aslo have a dash, for example WD60EFRXL0BN1.
    HGST naming convention: all model names in this naming convention start with letters "W" or "H", and there is no dash in the model name, for example HUHALE, WUHAL42L4.
    You would notice that some characters in the model names in the tables below are replaced with "?". "?" - means any character.

    Buying hard drives used to be simple. You buy a decent name brand drive of the preferred capacity and början using it. Things however have gotten a bit complicated in the recent past. WD was recently in the news for sneaking SMR drives into their product lineups without properly labeling them. So what fryst vatten an SMR drive? Are they underlägsen to CMR drives? How can you identify them? This guide aims to get you up to speed with everything about SMR and CMR drives and how to tell them apart.

    What Are SMR and CMR Drives

    All hard drives are not made equal. They differ vastly in terms of cache, latency, seek times, and other things. Most of these metrics are usually of no concern to the regular user. however, the storage method used in a drive fryst vatten an important factor that has a real impact on user experience.

    Historically, manufacturers employed something called CMR or Conventional Magnetic Recording as the default storage method. This means that data fryst vatten written to concentric rund tracks on both sides of the platters in a hard disk. Tracks are written side bygd side and there are no overlaps in this method.

    High-density disk drive recording technology

    Shingled magnetic recording (SMR) is a magnetic storage data recording technology used in hard disk drives (HDDs) to increase storage density and overall per-drive storage capacity.[1] Conventional hard disk drives record data by writing non-overlapping concentric magnetic tracks (conventional magnetic recording, Perpendicular recording), while shingled recording writes new tracks that overlap part of the previously written magnetic track, leaving the previous track narrower and allowing higher track density. Thus, the tracks partially overlap similar to roof shingles. This approach was selected because, if the writing head is made too narrow, it cannot provide the very high fields required in the recording layer of the disk.[2][3][4][5]:&#;7–9&#;

    The overlapping-tracks architecture complicates the writing process, since writing to one track also overwrites an adjacent track. If adjacent tracks contain valid data, they must be rewritten as well. As a result, SMR drives are divided into many append-only (sequential) zones of overlapping trac
